The Polish Diaspora in Brazil: A Research Overview and Information on Selected Fonds

Abstract

The history of Polish settlement in Brazil dates back to the mid-nineteenth century. The greatest intensity of migration was in 1890–1892 and was called “Brazilian fever”. Since then, numerous Polish organisations and associations have cultivated Polish identity and nurtured the memory of their ancestors’ homeland. Polish clergy was also active in this respect. Given the scale of migration, research on the Polish diaspora became the subject of numerous studies. Particularly popular were works on the history of settlements, memoirs documenting the activities of Polish diaspora organisations, or those devoted to important figures in social, cultural, economic and religious life. However, many issues related to the presence and activity of Poles in Brazil are still awaiting a thorough study. It would seem that there is an urgent need to take inventory, digitise and make available source materials that have not been explored so far, and which may yet prompt further research. One valuable resource is found in the archives of the Congregation of the Priests of Christ in Curitiba. It was the subject of research conducted in March and April 2023. The preliminary results of these studies are discussed in the presented text.
