The Pastoral Care of Polish Emigrants from the Perspective of the Security of Republic of Poland. Outline of the Issues

Abstract

The article addresses the issue of the relationship between the state and the Catholic Church from the perspective of the security of the Second and Third Republics. Leading the scientific considerations was the question of the utilitarian character of the activities, subordinate to the latter, of the Polish emigration ministry for its chosen dimension of military security. On the basis of the examples cited, an attempt was made to demonstrate that the maintenance of an appropriate level of cooperation between the above-mentioned entities may influence the attitudes desired by the state of compatriots living abroad, for whom the Catholic Church, despite the progressing secularisation in the world, remains the determinant of identity and specific patriotic behaviours. This pastoral potential of the diaspora, which derives from the social cross-section of the diaspora and from the fact that the diaspora centres maintain social ties based on faith and tradition in their countries of origin, could be used, for example, as it has been done in the past, to encourage the participation of our compatriots in a system of training and voluntary military service in order to increase the strength of our army. To abandon this or any other form of cooperation mentioned in the article would be to voluntarily give up the possibility of using the resources mentioned. An excessive restriction by the State of its relations with the Catholic Church, especially when there are no alternative entities with a far greater potential for public utility than it, would therefore not necessarily be desirable from the point of our national security.
