The Chodźko Family From Krzywicz – A Family Divided in the 19th Century by Politics

Abstract

The noble Chodźka family from Krzywicze is known to researchers who have repeatedly presented the achievements of its members. The paper presents the impact of the 19th century political changes taking place in the Russian partition on the fate of the Chodźka family. The professional careers of Jan Chodźko and his sons were pursued in the social and political conditions determined by Russia. They forced the Chodźka family to leave their ancestral home and scattered them around the world. The two older sons – Józef and Aleksander – entered the Russian service and achieved success in their scientific work. The younger sones took part in the November Uprising 1830 and left the country after it, actively participating in the life of independence emigration. Jan and his son Władysław were exiled to the Urals for their patriotic activities. Despite the difficult operating conditions, all Chodźkas achieved professional successes and recognition from their compatriots. Jan fulfilled his literary work devoted to Lithuanian history and culture. Józef, Aleksander, Stanisław and Michał achieved professional successes in their selected areas of activity. Despite political restrictions and state borders dividing them, the Chodźka family maintained contact with each other and with the country.
