Yesterday and Today the Polish-Speaking Pastoral Ministry in The United States of America

Abstract

The article presents the process of shaping the structures of the Polish-speaking pastoral ministry in the United States. It depicts the evolution of this pastoral ministry over the years, from the establishment of the first Polish parish in Panna Maria (TX) in 1855 to the present day. To fully understand the present shape of this pastoral ministry, the historical background of emigration from Poland to the United States over the years is also presented, including the beginnings of the creation of Polish-speaking pastoral institutions, most of which were personal parishes. The description of pastoral institutions is followed by a presentation of the factors that influenced the change process, with the outcome being the present state, based primarily on multicultural parishes and pastoral missions. For the sake of completeness, references to documents of the Universal Church on pastoral care for migrants and the attitude of the local Church community are also included.
