The Parish as a Vocational Community

Abstract

The parish, alongside the family and the seminary, is the fundamental vocational community. It is a privileged place for discerning and shaping a priestly vocation. The parish community is the closest environment for every faithful to embody the mystery of the Church. It plays a mediating and pedagogical role in fostering vocations. It reveals the Church as the Mother of vocations, the community of those called, and the instrument used by God in calling to the priesthood. The parish environment allows for a diagnosis of contemporary socio-cultural and ecclesial conditions, which directly impact priestly formation. The theological foundation of parish vocations ministry is an understanding of the mystery of the Church as the mysterium vocationis. The primary task of the parish is to build a culture of formation and vocations through witnessing to faith, praying for vocations and those called, and creating an ecclesial and social climate conducive to the birth and maturation of vocations. All parish ministry should have a vocational dimension.
