Priest Joseph Gawlina als Organizer of Catholic News Agency

Abstract

In the interwar period, representatives of the hierarchy of the Church in Poland had been pushing for creation of a central institution to management the Catholic information. This task will have to be implemented by the Catholic News Agency (KAP) under the auspices of the Press Commission of the Conference of the Polish Episcopate, which began its activity in April 1927. The first director of KAP was appointed priest Joseph Gawlina. He became the actual builder of its structures. Silesian priest, enjoyed the confidence of the Primate August Hlond and experienced in editorial work, took areconnaissance trip through Europe to would be able to cope with new demands. In this way, he established the necessary contacts and became acquainted with basic principles of working the news agencies in the West. Established institution had to face the serious challenges like counteracting anti-polish propaganda and influence on international and national public opinion, concerning the activities of the Church and the episcopate in Poland.
