The Mystery of the Epiphany as the Contents of a Homily

Abstract

This study, based on the analysis of the sources of preaching, shows the contents of a homily for celebrating the Epiphany. The main theme of this celebration is Christ, who in the event of the homage paid him by the Magi reveals the glory of God to all nations. Universal salvation is clearly emphasized. Christ appears as a personal “place” where every human being can find fulfillment of his spiritual aspirations. In the celebration, we also have the revelation of the Church, which is shown as a community bearing the peace of God, gathering people who are reconciled with each other and open to those who sincerely seek salvation. The contents of a homily should indicate the presence of this salvific event in the liturgical celebration. The signs that will help the faithful in recognizing this mystery in the liturgy are: the bread and wine, which, transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ, become the source of unity among all nations; a kneeling attitude as an expression of adoring the Savior; and light as a revelation of God's love and glory. The participants of this celebration should also have a proper spiritual disposition that will reflect the path the Magi took in search of the Messiah. The spiritual journey of the faithful during the liturgical celebration finds its continuation in the life of believers through the constant search and contemplation of God in the “poverty” of everyday life, in the poor, in the beauty of nature, along the paths of reason, in the Church who is the guardian of God's revelation. The faithful are also called to spiritual conversion, so that through the newness of their lives, they become a “light” that will draw other people to God.
