Bishops Advocating for the Poor and Evangelical Poverty: The “Jesus–Church–Poor” Group at the Third Session of the Second Vatican Council

Abstract

The article, based on unpublished archival materials from the Archives of the Catholic University of Louvain-la-Neuve in Belgium, analyzes the activities of the “Jesus–Church–poor” group during the third session of the Second Vatican Council. The author focuses on three issues: 1. The symbolic gesture of Paul VI, who donated his papal tiara to the poor and needy. The author discusses the event, its context—especially the encyclical Ecclesiam Suam—and the implications for the group, especially reinforcing the need for practical decisions; 2. Two petitions to the pope on poverty and the simplicity of the Church’s life and the evangelization of the poor. The author analyzes the content of the petitions and their impact on the Council’s deliberations; 3. The “Jesus–Church–poor” collaboration with Cardinal Giacomo Lercaro in preparing a report on poverty at the request of Paul VI, and in particular the three-part study by Bishop Marcos McGrath, Fr. Yves Congar, and Bishop John Wright.
