    A contribution to the history of coat-of-arms textiles. Coat-of-arms fabric in the collection of the Diocesan Museum in Sandomierz

    Abstract

    In the Diocesan Museum in Sandomierz there is an expensive satin and damask coat-of-arms embroidered with gold and treated, which belonged to Jan Zbigniew Ossoliński and his wife Anna Firlej, and on which there are various emblems. On the right, heraldic, side of the coat-of-arms, there are the coat-of-arms of Jastrzębiec, that of Ossoliński’s mother, Katarzyna Zborowska, and the Rawicz coat-of-arms of his paternal grandmother, Zbigniewa Słupecka. On the left-hand side of the heraldic coat-of-arms, there are the Doliwa coat-of-arms of Anna Firlej’s mother, Zofia Dzikówna, and that of Anna’s paternal grandmother, Katarzyna Tęczyńska. This tapestry belongs to the oldest surviving coat- of-arms wall-hangings in Poland. It was made between 1594 (the year of the Ossolinskis’ wedding) and 1600 (the date of Anna Ossolińska’s death).
