A Contribution to the History of Imaging: The Iubilaeus Symbolicus for Nuncio Fabius Chigi

Abstract

Jacob Masen’s collection of poetry entitled Iubilaeus symbolicus contains one hundred and fifty works dedicated to Innocent X and Fabius Chigi, later Pope Alexander VII. The author divides the entire collection into three parts, fifty pieces each, thus referring to the jubilee year 1650 in which the collection of epigrams was first published. In this article, we will look at the first fifty, which deal with the symbols of the Chigi family, namely, the oak, mountains, star and eagle. The material of the works, their arrangement and genetic affiliation are also taken into account.
