I Am No Longer the Owner: Tomasz Górnicki – the Sculpture

Abstract

Tomasz Górnicki’s work belongs to the broadly defined tradition of realist figuration. The artist works with equal ease on both monumental and intimate scales. He creates compositions in stone and metal that are not intended solely for gallery spaces or private collections. Instead, he frequently places them in public and urban environments, thereby assuming the role of a performative artist who invites viewers to engage actively with his works and to observe their surroundings critically. Tomasz Górnicki is often described as an artist with a “guerrilla” approach to art and a critical perspective on contemporary reality. The titles of his sculptural installations frequently function as commentaries on the relationship between culture and politics, as well as on the oppressive nature of cultural institutions and imposed social norms. The sculptor also engages in a bold dialogue with sacred art and the paintings of the Old Masters. He is particularly inspired by the art of the Baroque, drawing on motifs from its classical iconography. On both the iconographic and conceptual levels, many of Górnicki’s works focus on the psychological dimensions of human identity, human nature, and familial and social relationships.
