Tadeusz Chrzanowski – An Art Historian First and Foremost. The Professor Through the Eyes of the Younger Generation

Justyna Zawistowska

Abstract

This article presents the life and work of Tadeusz Chrzanowski (1926–2006), an outstanding art historian, professor, monument conservator, writer, translator, photographer, and advocate for the protection of cultural heritage. Professor Chrzanowski did not limit himself to academic research on art; rather, he treated art as a means of reflection on history, national identity, and cultural memory. Throughout his life, he combined scholarly work with conservation and social activity. He was associated, among others, with the Catholic University of Lublin (KUL), where he established the Department of Artistic Culture. He supervised more than 200 master’s theses and 18 doctoral dissertations. He was also active in numerous academic and cultural organisations and chaired the Social Committee for the Restoration of Kraków’s Monuments, contributing significantly to the preservation of many valuable historic monuments in the city. Of particular importance was his long-standing collaboration with Marian Kornecki. Together, they carried out inventories of monuments as part of the Catalogue of Art Monuments in Poland, documenting thousands of objects across the country. This article also summarises the most important of Chrzanowski’s academic works, e.g. ‘Sztuka ziemi krakowskiej’, ‘Polskie pomniki w świątyniach Rzymu’, and ‘Portret staropolski’.
