Corrections and Additions to the Polish Academy of Sciences’ Catalogue of Art Monuments with Regard to Organs in Upper Silesia

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of catalog descriptions of the furnishings of churches in the former Pszczyna County, focusing on the presence of historic organs. The inventory results were published in 1961. This volume included descriptions of 25 churches, prepared as part of an inventory of historical monuments in the then Katowice Voivodeship. Organs were omitted entirely in 10 of the descriptions, despite exhibiting historical features, while three instruments were mentioned only with approximate dating. The reason for the overly superficial approach to organs and the erroneous classification of their stylistic features stemmed from the lack of knowledge about organs among the then catalogers (art historians). In the 1960s, organology as a specialized discipline was still in its infancy. However, the inventory provided the first impetus for systematic research and a comprehensive inventory of historic organs in Poland.
