The Influence of Hans Henny Jahnn’s Ideas on the Reconstruction of Michael Engler’s Organ in the Church of St. Nicholas in Brzeg (On the 130th Anniversary of His Birth)

Abstract

The renovation and reconstruction of the organ of M. Engler the Younger in the Church of St Nicholas in Brzeg in the years 1925-1928 under the direction of Hans Henny Jahnn was the only evidence of the application of his original ideas in organs in today’s Polish territories. For this reason alone, considering the originality of his ideas and achievements and at the same time their poor reception, it remains an important subject of research.

Following the process of preparation and implementation of the project, we gain insight not only into the process of implanting the idea of returning to the renovation of organs according to historical patterns in Silesia, but above all we see the exceptional role of Jahnn in this undertaking, as a pioneer of reform and at the same time a figure going beyond the conservative historicist paradigm of Orgelbewegung. In this project, as one of the first, the Baroque masterpiece of M. Engler’s organ was not only subjected to meticulous renovation, but also became a field for the implementation of Jahnn’s idiosyncratic vision, based on the theory of harmonics. The implementation of the project encountered many difficulties and the utopian nature of the ideas underlying it, although so fascinating, did not allow for a creative continuation to our times. Jahnn’s vision did not survive his living legacy, just like the Brzeg organs themselves.
