Diary As A Letter: A Case of 19th-Century Women’s Intimate Writing

Abstract

The paper examines the epistolary dimension of a recently discovered diary of Pelagia Rościszewska, a Polish noblewoman residing in the Kievan Governorate, written between 1819 and 1856. The diary was inspired by 18th-century French letter-writing traditions and 19th-century Polish autobiographical writing. Referring to the concept of doxa as understood by Pierre Bourdieu, the author argues for the pivotal role of the generic aspects of Rościszewska’s text in shaping the matrilineal transmission it embodies.

Keywords:
