The Attitude of Izabela Działyńska née Czartoryska towards Her Nephew, August Czartoryski

Abstract

Izabela Countess Działyńska (Iza) née Czartoryska, daughter of Prince Adam Jerzy Czartoryski, wife of Jan Kanty Działyński, the collector and founder of the museum in the castle in Gołuchów, which she rebuilt, was already in her lifetime regarded an introverted, inaccessible and haughty person. Zygmunt Krasiński described her as “icy,” and such an image of Iza has been perpetuated in historiography. Family correspondence, however, reveals that she behaved quite differently towards her immediate family. This article shows that she had a particularly close bond with the future blessed one, August (Gucio), the only son of Władysław Czartoryski and his Spanish wife, Maria Amparo Muñoz y de Borbón. To him, she was able to be direct, showing a sense of humor, sharing her problems, as well as her joys and interests related not only to art. She hosted him in Gołuchów several times, showing motherly care. She influenced his upbringing in the Polish spirit. Nevertheless, she could not accept her nephew’s choice of the clerical career, putting the interests of the Czartoryski family above August’s will.
