“Black or White?” On Anna Kim’s Novel Geschichte eines Kindes (2022)

Abstract

In her novel Geschichte eines Kindes (2022) Anna Kim mixes two temporal levels and two life histories to examine how the attributions associated with ethnicizing categorizations influence the identity self-concepts of clearly different individuals. This article examines the attempts of their classification and self-identification. With reference to the author’s essays, attention is first directed to the violation of the right of apparent strangers to privacy. Subsequent discussion focuses on the processes of the novels protagonists’ identity quest, followed by an analysis of the novel’s essential interplay between truth and illusion.

Keywords:
