The Dualistic Version of the Past in Stefan Zweig’s Autobiography The World of Yesterday: Memoirs of a Certain European

Abstract

The subject of the article is the dualistic version of the past in Stefan Zweig’s autobiography The World of Yesterday: Memoirs of a Certain European, in which the author’s memories are combined with his objective a look at the culture of old Europe, especially Vienna and the monarchy of Austria-Hungary. The analysis aims to show the historical background of the uprising of the work, as well as discrepancies between the sober description of the war and the interwar period, an idealized image of the Habsburg era and the answer to the question about the sources of this duality.
