Nature as a Nominative Element in the Creation of Polish Football Club Names

Abstract

This article is an attempt to look at the issue of the nominations of Polish football clubs, using nature in its broadest sense in the creation of names – the world of plants and animals (fauna and flora), but also some meteorological phenomena, celestial bodies and physical phenomena, minerals, landforms, etc. The analyses aim to establish: a) the lexical-semantic fields from which the creators draw their motivational basis, b) the repertoire of words used for nominalisation, c) their frequency and d) the connoted meanings. The vocabulary of nature-associated appellations comprises 124 motivation bases used in the naming of 751 football clubs and confirms the eternal interdependence of the human world and nature one.
