How Do Animals Eat? Some Linguistic Interpretations

Abstract

This article is an attempt to describe Polish eating-related verbs denoting the eating activities of animals. Before distinguishing the predicates used for describing animals, it was necessary to investigate the necessary limitations on the selection related to the completion of the position of the performer of the activity and of the object that are imposed in this area by the lexemes jeść/eat and żreć/devour. Subsequently, verbs denoting specific methods of the consumption of food (dziobać/ peck, skubać/nibble, paść się/graze, żerować/feed, pasożytować/parasite) that are typical of non-human beings were analysed in terms of their connectivity in order to distinguish other “human” and “animal” eating-related verbs. The research material was analysed using research tools developed within lexical semantics.
