The Russian Verb говеть [govet'] and Its Derivatives in Translational Confrontation
Abstract
The article presents the results of a study of Polish translation equivalents of all Russian lexemes included in the derivation nest motivated by the verb govet‘ (говеть), carried out on the complete material of Russian texts included in the National Corpus of the Russian Language and their translations into Polish. These lexemes, belonging to the religious vocabulary commonly used in the sphere of Orthodox religious customs, do not have permanent equivalents in Polish, which requires translators to make an increased effort in determining equivalents and choosing appropriate translation techniques. 91 contexts of the use of the studied lexemes in 34 works of Russian literature of the 19th and 20th centuries and their translations were analyzed. It was found that translators use a number of translation techniques, the most common of which turned out to be concretization, consisting in reducing the semantic structure of original units in translations. The techniques used lead to cultural adaptation, as a result they do not emphasize the diversity of Orthodox religious customs. The image of Russian Orthodox customs is modified, and the Polish reader usually does not receive information about its specific features.
