The Future of the Power System in the People’s Republic of China After the 20th Congress of the Communist Party of China

Abstract

After the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2017 political power structure in the PRC has undergone a substantial reshuffle which led to the strengthening of the Party’s institutions and diminishing of the autonomy and authority of government administration. These changes heavily influenced the effective management of state affairs in various fields. 20th National Party Congress not only decided to further increase the Party’s overall control capacity but also secured Xi Jinping’s third term in office as secretary general. These developments pose serious challenges to China’s political system stability in the long run as the Party becomes more and more inflexible in governing the country and prone to internal upheavals due to the cessation of the generational power succession.
