Walerian Meysztowicz was born in 1893 to a wealthy landowner family in Pojość (an estate in the Kaunas Governorate). His father, Aleksander, was a conservative social and political activist. After Walerian became a Catholic priest in 1924, he had to face numerous challenges related to his academic and diplomatic careers, as well as social and scientific involvement. He became intensively involved in the latter area after leaving the country in 1939 and permanently settling in Rome. Regarding his scientific career, the paper provides information on his successive degrees and titles (doctorate in Rome, habilitation and professorship in Vilnius). Meysztowicz’s stay in Rome was initially associated with his office as the Canonical Counselor of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in the Vatican. After the outbreak of World War II, he permanently left the country and, for over 40 years, researched the history of his motherland and the dissemination of his findings. In 1945, Meysztowicz founded the Polish Historical Institute in Rome, where he initiated and coordinated numerous publishing projects in the field of Polish history, especially the editing of primary sources. He died in Rome in 1982.
