Geography of the Redemptorist Missions of the Warsaw Province and Care Among Poles and Polonia from 1946 to 2016(2025)

Abstract

Since 1946, the quarterly “Nasze Wiadomości” has systematically documented the missionary work of Polish Redemptorists, including care for the Polish diaspora around the world. The Warsaw Province has covered areas e.g. Argentina, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Germany, Russia and Ukraine. The missionaries also carried out their ministry among Poles, and activities varied depending on the country and historical situation. Compatriots of the Redemptorists could make up a significant part of the parishioners, especially in labor emigration; in the former Soviet republics, there was a national minority of Polish origin, whose religiosity had been suppressed for years. In South America, the Redemptorists worked in vast areas where Poles were scattered, but sought to maintain Polish identity and religiosity. Missionaries in each of these places had to cope with cultural and linguistic differences, which affected the form of their ministry. They celebrated the sacraments, organized parish missions and retreats for all the faithful, but also cultivated Polish culture and history, as well as learning the language, to strengthen national identity among emigrants and descendants of Poles around the world.
