The Polish Catholic Mission in England and Wales. Its History, Role and the Meaning of Polish Pastoral Care in the British Isles 1894-2023

Abstract

The historical outline encompasses the period 1894-2023 and aims to be a contribution to the further study of the role and meaning of Polish pastoral care in the British Isles. Note has been made of significant events and leading personalities who played a part in the creation of the mission and its erstwhile work, as well as the localities in which it resided. The establishment of other organisations aiming at the integration of the Polish community in Great Britain are also described. Organisations such as The Polish Institute of Catholic Action in the UK, the Catholic Publishing Centre “Veritas”, Polish Catholic Youth Association, Association of Polish Students and Graduates in Great Britain, “Loreto” Courses, countless publications, and the network of Polish parishes. Attention is directed to the work of the Chaplaincy General of the Polish Forces 1940-1968. Mention is also made regarding the creation of the Archives of the Polish Catholic Mission in England and Wales whose role it is to safeguard the archives held, not necessarily solely those created through the work of the Mission.
