Activities of Polish Veterans’ Organisations in France Portrayed in Syrena Weekly

Abstract

The article focuses on the role of Syrena weekly as the voice of Polish veterans’ organisations in France. The magazine documented and recorded the activity of organisations such as the Union of Polish War Refugees, Association of Reservists and Former Polish Military Personnel in France, Federation of Polish Defenders of the Fatherland, Polish Organisation for the Struggle for Independence, and the Grenadier Society. The development of these organisations and their impact on the social, cultural and political life of the Polish Diaspora is presented on the basis of archival records of the Polish Catholic Mission in France. A special emphasis is given to the Grenadier Brigade, part of the 4th Infantry Division continuing the traditions of the 1st Grenadier Division, which fought in Alsace and Lorraine. Moreover, Syrena chronicled veterans’ celebrations such as the Day of the Polish Serviceman, dedications of military standards and the Third of May celebrations. The weekly furthermore documented the operations of the Veterans Homes in Lille and in Paris and pastoral care for the Polish Diaspora, with army veterans playing a significant role.
