The Importance of the Polish Diaspora for the Cultural Security of the Republic of Poland

Abstract

The subject of this scientific inquiry is an attempt to identify the utilitarian value of the Polish diaspora’s contributions in terms of protecting national identity, from the perspective of contemporary challenges and threats to our cultural security. This raises fundamental research questions about the methodology for selecting these contributions and the potential scope of their current impact. These considerations will be accompanied by the thesis that such contributions could be used in shaping national identity, which is, in part, a foundation for a properly functioning state security system. This relationship is underscored by key state documents, including the Constitution of the Republic of Poland and the National Security Strategy.

However, the observed practice in this regard does not foster an appropriate level of relationship between the state and the diaspora. Nevertheless, past experiences, as well as the number and distribution of individuals around the world who identify with Polishness, suggest the possibility of leveraging this currently underappreciated potential. This potential could play a role in public diplomacy, particularly in strengthening the positive image of the Republic of Poland and its cultural and economic appeal, as well as in supporting the process of shaping national identity, especially among the younger generation. The author believes that it is worth considering the application of a basic criterion, which could involve classifying selected cultural products of the diaspora as national cultural assets, as designated by relevant legislation. These assets are directly linked to maintaining balance in cultural security, thereby supporting the state security system.
