From Krzepice to Canada. Rev. Franciszek Olszewski’s Polish Work in Alberta Prairies

Abstract

Rev. Franciszek Olszewski (1869-1955) was born in Krzepice in the Russian partition. Religious atmosphere found in his family home led him to become a priest. Having finished his education in Salesian centres in Italy and graduating from theological studies in France in 1900, together with several oblates he went to Canada to do missionary work. After being ordained to the priesthood in 1900, he joined the clergy of the Diocese of St Albert and he did not become the member of the order. He did dynamic missionary work in the spirit of Polish patriotism. He established the Kraków settlement as well as a range of smaller Polish parishes with churches and chapels. He took religious care of Polish emigrants’ children. In order to continue that mission, he obtained approval for establishing the Sisterhood of Auxiliaries of the Apostolate to do schoolwork. In 1910, fire occurred in the Kraków settlement, which was his greatest work. As a result, the fire consumed the church as well as the church and school buildings. He was willing to rebuild the burnt settlement, however, his rheumatic problems prevented him from normal functioning. The same year, together with nuns he moved to the USA, where he ran a lively Polish mission in several dioceses until his death in 1955.
