Forgiveness in Marriage as a Mechanism of Transformation and Renewal of the Marital Bond: An Interdisciplinary Analysis

Abstract

The article analyses forgiveness as a process supporting the transformation and renewal of marital bonds. It proposes an integrative seven-stage model combining sociology, psychology, pedagogy, and theology. Based on a narrative review and synthesis of major process models, it shows that forgiveness is a multidimensional and non-linear process that can strengthen marital resilience when grounded in safety, autonomy, boundaries, self-reflection, and observable behavioral change. The model distinguishes forgiveness from reconciliation and trust rebuilding, emphasizing that forgiveness does not remove responsibility for harm or justify pressure exerted on the injured spouse. It integrates clinical approaches, Christian spiritual practices, and the pedagogical concept of self-formation. The article argues that forgiveness may become a resource for therapy, pastoral care, and marital self-help when treated as a gradual process of moral, relational, and spiritual renewal.
