The Process of Establishing the Social World of International School Teachers – Dilemmas and Challenges

Abstract

The article is devoted to the process of segmentation, leading to internal differentiation and the emergence of subworlds within social worlds. The theoretical framework for the following considerations is Anselm Strauss’s sociological concept of social worlds. The subject of our analyzes was the process of establishing the social world of international school teachers in the context of challenges and dilemmas. The aim of the research was to reconstruct the mechanisms enabling the emergence of the described social world, as well as to describe the difficulties experienced by the respondents. Using the potential of grounded theory methodology and adopting an interactive perspective, dimensions were identified within which the respondents experience professional difficulties and dilemmas. It turns out that the felt tension mobilizes teachers to take specific actions to cope with everyday challenges, and this stimulates the emergence of a subworld. In the following considerations, we will characterize three types of teachers’ relationships: with students; colleagues and the environment (representatives of other social worlds).
