This article analyzes the role of Father Juan de Dios Andrade as a central figure in the Christian resistance against the dictatorship of Marcos Pérez Jiménez in Venezuela. It studies his pastoral work as well as his literary and journalistic production, understood as instruments of ethical denunciation and social mobilization in a context of political repression and censorship. Special attention is paid to his famous homily “Abajo Cadenas”, delivered in January 1958, conceived as an act of affirmation of popular sovereignty and defense of fundamental rights. Based on the analysis of primary and secondary sources, the study reflects on the role of the Catholic Church in the Venezuelan democratization processes and on the validity of Christian commitment in authoritarian contexts.
