The Case of Polish Foundations in Rome and Loreto during the Napoleonic Period

Abstract

This article is devoted to attempts to recover Polish foundations in Rome and Loreto during the period of the Duchy of Warsaw. These were primarily two Roman churches: St. Stanislaus and Madonna del Pascolo, together with their buildings, including the St. Stanislaus hospice. In addition, there were estates, for example three vineyards near Loreto, and funds allocated before the partitions to support Polish pilgrims in Rome and to educate Polish youth in Italy. As a result of the partitions, these foundations came under Italian administration and were lost to Poles living in Italy. Knowledge of them survived thanks to a group of Polish priests who remained in Rome. These were Gabriel Sokołowski, Ignacy Zdzieborowski and Juda Mickiewicz. The subject also arose in the Duchy of Warsaw itself, among other things during preparations for the possible conclusion of a concordat with the Holy See and in 1812, when it was hoped that the Kingdom of Poland would be revived as a result of the war with Russia. In this context, there was an argument for restoring to Frederick Augustus the prerogatives of Polish monarchs, whose successor he was not so much by the grace of Napoleon Bonaparte as by the will of the Sejm, expressed in the Constitution of 3 May.
