The Challenges Facing the Polish Diaspora as Seen by Young Americans of Polish Descent from Chicago

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyze the ongoing transformations within the structure and identity of contemporary Polish diaspora communities in the Chicago metropolitan area, with a particular focus on the youngest generation of Polish Americans. Drawing on a series of in-depth interviews conducted with students aged 18-24, the author identifies key factors shaping the attitudes and interests of young people of Polish descent toward their ancestral homeland. The study highlights the increasing spatial dispersion of the Polish community in Chicago and socio-political changes taking place among young representatives of the Polish diaspora. Furthermore, the research points to the growing importance of direct contact with Poland and the role of state institutions in fostering cultural and identity-based connections among young diaspora members. Although the study is exploratory and not representative, it offers valuable insights and serves as a foundation for further research on post-millennial generations of Polish descent and the future of the Polish diaspora in the United States.
