Cultural Memory – the Example of Into the West

Abstract

In Into the West the history is presented through two families, one from Virginia and one from the Lacota Nation. It is a hybrid form of narration, where fictious characters meet historical figures and take part in historical events. It gives the audience the feel of the history, customs and intercultural relations of the 19th century America. It is one of very few positive instances of on screen fictionalization of historical events of Native Americans. It is also an interesting example of cultural memory. Into the West stands out as one of the least stereotypical portrayals of indigenous peoples in the popular culture.
