Pier Paolo Pasolini and Christianity. Some Facets of a Complex Relationship

Reinhold Zwick

Abstract

With his multifaceted artistic works and still remarkably relevant critical writings, Pier Paolo Pasolini (1922-1975) continues to enjoy a high level of international attention almost fifty years after his death. This article profiles the central, yet mostly underestimated role of Christian faith in Pasolini’s life and work, despite his self-description as an atheist. Partly in an overview, partly in unfolded samples, selected biographical testimonies, literary works, and films by Pasolini are examined, in particular his two very important, but unrealized film projects “Saint Paul” and “Porno-Theo-Colossal,” his last script and intended capstone of his directorial works. In the process, the striking Christological vein becomes visible, which profoundly pervades not only Pasolini’s oeuvre, but also his life.

Keywords:
