A Village in the Spiš Region in the Eyes of The Slovak Minority in Krempachy: A Sociological and Anthropological Study

Abstract

This article aims to present selected aspects of everyday life and perception of Polish-Slovak relations in a culturally diverse environment using the example of the village of Krempachy. The important topics are: the activity of the Slovak minority and its efforts, the preservation of national and ethnic identity, historical and contemporary antagonisms. The data for the analysis come from a focus interview and three individual in-depth interviews with representatives of the Slovak minority. The material was developed based on the assumptions of a theory based on narrative analysis techniques, where interlocutors’ statements were included to illustrate the formulated conclusions. The Krempachy community exemplify successful integration of cultural diverse residents. However, attention was drawn to school and church as potential flashpoints in mutual relations. This conclusion raises further questions about the occurrence of reconciliation and conflict phenomena at the regional level. Answering these questions would require additional research on the villages of the Spiš region.
