The Importance of Social Capitalin Creating Community Safety

Abstract

Without social capital, a democratic state and civil society cannot function. It is characterized by a high level of social trust, solidarity, reciprocity, the prevalence of customary law over written law. Indicators of its level are the number of NGOs and volunteers, participation in elections and referendums, trust in the public and private spheres. It also translates into the state of security at the local level. The research questions, arising from the topic of the article, are: how is social capital defined, what are its types and ways of measuring it? social capital of what nature can be diagnosed in Polish society? what activities resulting from civic activity can be used to strengthen the sense of local security? The theoretical layer was based on analysis and synthesis, as well as induction and deduction. In the empirical layer, statistical data on multifaceted indicators of social capital were used.
