Pastor Karol Diehl’s Message to His Fellow Believers Concerning the War of 1812

Abstract

This article looks at a little-known document from the memorable year 1812. It is an address to the Evangelical clergy in Poland, written by Pastor Karol Diehl, the superior of the Evangelical-Reformed churches in the Duchy of Warsaw, as prescribed by Article 8 of the General Confederation of the Kingdom of Poland, which called the citizens to join the Confederation. It obliged superiors of all denominations to inform and encourage the faithful to undertake that task. The address was written in the patriotic spirit and the hope that a victorious war on Russia would bring back, as he believed, the „happy times“ of the Republic at the height of its power – the latter half of the 16th century. For him, this was an era of toleration, development and universal peace.
