A Road to War. The Second Spanish Republic of 1931-1936

Abstract

This article aims to be both factually synthetic and conceptually analytical in order to explain the resounding failure of the regime of the Second Republic. It was a political system in which the state became a bitter enemy of a substantial part of the nation. The scandalous electoral fraud of February 1936 was the prelude to a bloody civil war.

Keywords:

Spain, Second Republic of 1931-1936, political system, peripheral nationalism, anti-clericalism
