Verba Volant, Scripta Manent: Documentary Legacy of the January Uprising

Abstract

The aim of this article is to recall the complicated fate of the legacy documentation of the January Uprising and to assess its current research potential. Special attention was paid to source materials concerning the role of churches of various denominations in the Uprising, the attitude of the church hierarchy towards the events and the participation of the clergy in the Uprising. The subject of interest were both archival materials collected by archives and rememberance institutions in Poland and beyond its current borders.

The documentation was created by both the authorities of the newly created Underground State and people involved in the insurgent movement, as well as the partitioning authorities. The documents that were essential for reconstructing the history of the national movement were created as part of the current activities of the central and local insurgent authorities. Its principal part is stored in the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw and in 2014 it was entered on the prestigious national list in UNESCO’s “Memory of the World” program.

Important resources are held by state archives in 13 cities: Kalisz, Płock, Lublin, Łódź, Częstochowa, Kielce, Radom, Piotrków Trybunalski, Warszawa, Siedlce, Zamość, Białystok and Suwałki. Materials concerning Galicia’s reaction to the 1863 Uprising are stored in the State Archives inPrzemyśl, the State Archives in Rzeszów and the National Archives in Kraków. Fragments of the documentary legacy of the uprising have been preserved in the archives of Polish diaspora institutions outside the country and in the archives of the countries currently neighboring Poland. These are materials stored in state archives in Ukraine (mainly in Lviv and Kiev), Belarus (archives in Minsk), Lithuania (in archives and libraries in Vilnius) and Russia (in the archives in Moscow and St. Petersburg and the state regional archives in Irkutsk, Omsk, Tobolsk).
