Abstract

Teofil Magdziński, a former January Uprising insurgent, belonged to a small group of national activists operating in the second half of the 19th century in Bydgoszcz, a city considered a bastion of Germanness in the east. He was a long-time representative of Poles in the Prussian and the German parliaments. He died on 1 February 1889. We lost another fighter for the Polish cause in the parliamentary forum and the depletion of the circle of Wielkopolska social activists. The funeral of Magdziński, which took place on 6 February 1889 in Bydgoszcz, was a great patriotic manifestation attended by many local Poles and representatives from the entire province. The funeral speech over the coffin was delivered by Father F. Stablewski, an excellent orator. His speech was not only a laudation in honor of the deceased, but also guidance for future generations, explaining what patriotism, love of the homeland and being a good Christian are about. It explained the fate of the Polish nation in an allegorical way.
