The Sisters of Saint Elisabeth in the Diocese of Warmia: Preserved Documentation at the Archive of New Records of the Archdiocese of Warmia, Olsztyn

Abstract

This article presents the history of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Elizabeth in the Diocese of Warmia after 1945. The Congregation started operating in this area as early as 1864 and in the following decades it established twenty-four houses. However, after the Second World War, following human losses and changes to the boundaries of the diocese, the Sisters worked in only nine facilities. Already in the early 1950s, repressions forced them to leave Kwidzyn, but right after the war they set up a house in Olsztyn), which did not last long, either, because in 1948 they were replaced by the Franciscan Sisters of the Family of Mary. Outside Kwidzyn, pre-war facilities survived in Bartoszyce, Biesowo, Orzechowo, Ostróda, Postolin and Straszewo. After 1945, besides the Olsztyn house, another was established in 1951 in Nowe Kawkowo. In their work, the Sisters focused on ambulatory care, Caritas works of charity, care of churches, and catechisation. However, after 1970, they would close their houses – when the diocese was divided in 1992, none operated there. The last house, in Nowe Kawkowo, was closed in 1989.
