This article addresses the question of the identity and scope of Pięć zarysów [Five Sketches], the relationship linking this composite work with Próby [Trials] and with the essay O sztuce [On Art]. Editorial practice and research have recognised the relationship between Pięć zarysów and Próby, completely ignoring the third title. The argument presented here – respecting the author’s will as expressed in the compositional arrangement in the Brockhaus edition of Poezje [Poems] – aims at the recognition of a certain degree of autonomy of the three mentioned texts as a single cyclic block, in a strictly defined order adopted in the first edition of the Brockhaus edition of Poezje – thus, as an authorial whole, albeit one without a common distinguishing featuresuch as a title.
