In Norwid’s oeuvre, the words “polite”, “politeness”, “rude”, “impolite” function as semantic nodes, i.e. recurring words, motifs, ideas that define the horizon of the world of values, ordering the poet’s worldview and work. This article analyses the axiological status of politeness and impoliteness, their philosophical, semantic and practical dimensions in the work of the author of Milczenie [Silence]. An aspectual overview of the poet’s work shows us an “(im)polite Norwid” for whom choosing to be polite is often an ethically negative choice. In turn, impoliteness turns out to be a difficult privilege of epistemological courage.
