From debut to end: Norwid’s experiments with the sonnet

Abstract

The article demonstrates how Cyprian Norwid played poetically with sonnet conventions in his work. The presented analyses are based on a review of the poet’s sonnets and his statements on the subject. The author of the article puts forward the thesis that the sonnet was a genre that attracted Norwid’s attention throughout the entire period of his creative activity, from his youthful poetic attempts, through all stages of his creative maturity, to the last years of his life. The sonnets Norwid wrote prove that the poet drew on a rich literary tradition, while in the later stages of his creative life he indulged in increasingly daring poetic experiments. In this way, he added an interesting chapter to the history of this genre in Poland.
