Ecclesiastical Office in Canon Law

Abstract

The author analyzes the Latin term officium and its semantic, philosophical, theological, ecclesial, and canonical meanings. In canonical terminology, this term usually means ecclesiastical office. Persons exercising or directing offices have not only rights but also duties associated with them. According to Divine appointment, there are the following ecclesiastical offices in the Catholic Church: Roman Pontiff, College of Bishops, and bishop. All other offices are appointed by decision of the competent ecclesiastical authority. They must be directed towards the good of all the faithful and pursue the goal of the Church, which is the salvation of souls. The author of the article presents a general description of ecclesiastical office and its characteristics in accordance with the intention of the ecclesiastical legislator.
