Religious Issues in Poznań in the 19th and First Half of the 20th Century (Until 1939) in Polish Historiography After 1989

Abstract

The aim of this article is to outline the main trends in Polish historiography after 1989, dealing with the history of churches and, more broadly, Christian denominations in the Poznań region, i.e., the part of western Poland which in the 19th century was under Prussian rule as the Grand Duchy of Poznań, and in the years 1919-1939 mostly belonged to the Poznań Province of the Second Polish Republic (within the borders prior to the new administrative division carried out in 1938). The most characteristic feature of this trend in Polish historiography is the division – also visible in Western Europe – between “secular” historians, associated with universities, the Polish Academy of Sciences, archives, and museums, and “ecclesiastical” historians, most of whom are clergy and treat the history of the Church as a subdiscipline of theology. This division, which was obvious until 1989, persisted after the fall of the Polish People’s Republic, but the two groups began to cooperate closely. Unfortunately, interest in the history of Christianity in the 19th and first half of the 20th century, which was quite intense in the last decade of the 20th century and the first decade of the 21st century, has clearly waned in the second and third decades of the 21st century. Professional historical research is in a clear stagnation, and the situation is being saved by historians and enthusiasts of regional and local history, who search for sources and develop detailed topics, which they then publish on the Internet and in niche, low-circulation local publications.
