Military and Patriotic Traditions in the Siła-Nowicki Family

Abstract

The aim of this article was to analyze the biographies of three generations of the Siła- Nowicki family, Emmanuel and Wiktor Siła-Nowickis, Władysław Siła-Nowicki and two of his daughters, Maria and Agnieszka, in light of their continuation of military and patriotic traditions in the family. An attempt was made to answer questions about the values common to these three generations. It turns out that despite the passage of time, different life circumstances and historical conditions, family traditions were sustained. Values espoused by people living in the late 19th and early 20th centuries were also close to the representatives of the Siła-Nowicki family born in the middle of the 20th century. The article should be viewed as a contribution to broader research into how patriotic values were kept up in Polish families with nobility and landowners’ traditions.
