Andrzej Wojtkowski, a Historian of Poznań
Abstract
Andrzej Wojtkowski was a historian who settled in Poznań in 1920. There, he began to explore the history of 19th-century Greater Poland province, consciously depicting its Polish character in response to the approach preferred by German historians. He also studied issues related to the history of Poznań, presenting them in the historical magazine Kronika Miasta Poznania (The Poznań Chronicle). Wojtkowski did not deal with the political system or municipal administration; rather, the most important thing for him was to present the city as a centre of Polish culture and national activity, with particular emphasis on the first half of the 19th century. His major works include a history of the Poznań Society of Friends of Learning, a biography of Edward Raczyński, and a bibliography of the City of Poznań.
