Cyprian Norwid’s “Czułość” in the German-language adaptation

Abstract

The main aim of this article was to establish reliable strategies for reconstructing the stylistic features of the poem Czułość [Tenderness] in a German-language series of translations, and to define the function of the translations’ style in a situation where the original defies uniform interpretations. The research objectives were pursued with a view to promoting good practices in the transfer of Cyprian Norwid’s idiostyle into another linguistic domain. The analysis was conducted using adapted version of the katena method. It demonstrated that the source of translation strategies useful in relation to the poetics of the original included: (1) the translators’ use of stylistic variance within the target language in terms of lexis and grammar, (2) the exploitation of the connotative background of the selected expressions, and the possibilities they offer for the construal and modulation of meaning, (3) the consideration of the pragmatic potential of the original context, and (4) the translators’ adherence to the stylistic and linguistic parameters of the speaker’s point of view in the source text. The research also shows that the stylistic functions of the translations of Czułość boil down to harmonising the polysemic meaning of the poem and introducing German readers to several of Cyprian Norwid’s characteristic stylistic categories, including irony, omission and sententiousness.
